Young coders turn a weekend hackathon into a delivery app

Built in 48 hours, the app now handles more than 300 orders a day for neighbourhood shops.

What began as a weekend hackathon project is now a delivery app used by more than 60 neighbourhood shops.

The four founders, all under 25, built the first version in 48 hours. It lets shops list what they have in stock and send orders to riders nearby.

"We wanted something that works on a cheap phone with a weak signal," said one of the founders. The app uses little bandwidth and can take orders by text message.

Shop owners say they sell more because customers no longer need to walk to them. Riders earn per delivery and choose their own hours.

The team is now raising money to expand to two more cities next year.
