Rainy season: how farmers are planning for a shorter harvest

With the rains starting late, farmers are switching to faster-growing seeds and sharing tractors.

With the rains arriving three weeks late, farmers on the edge of the city are changing what they plant and when.

Many are switching to maize and bean varieties that grow faster, so they can still harvest before the dry season.

Farmers' groups are sharing tractors to plant more quickly. One group says it planted 40 hectares in four days.

Agricultural officers warn that late rains can also bring heavier storms, and advise farmers to clear drainage around their plots.

Food sellers say prices of some vegetables may rise for a few weeks before the new harvest arrives.
