How a savings club is teaching secondary school pupils to manage money
Weekly lessons and a real savings account help pupils plan for school fees and small businesses.
Every Wednesday after classes, 120 pupils at a secondary school meet for a lesson on saving, budgeting and running a small business.
Each pupil has a real savings account with a small starting balance. They can add to it and watch it grow with interest.
Pupils plan a small project each term, such as selling snacks at sports day, and keep a simple record of costs and sales.
Teachers say pupils now talk about prices and budgets at home. "My mother asks me to check her market list," one pupil said.
